"Someone's left you a voicemail message, but all you can make out are the last words: "I'm sorry. I should've told you months ago. Bye." Who is it from, and what is this about?
I thought about this and it made me think of the effects I have experienced in the past from gossip.
I hate it! It is so ugly!
Anyway, there was a time in the distant past that a very nasty and untrue rumor was being spread around town about me. I knew absolutely nothing about it although I did find that I was being snubbed by people who were my friends. It went on for two years, until out of the blue one day, one of those friends got in contact with me to apologize. I was floored to find out what people were believing about me. Less floored by the reasoning behind why the person who started the rumor did it. I totally got it once I found out. She was really between a rock and a hard place and needed a scapegoat. I get it. It saddens me because I really considered her a super good friend, but I get it. Unlike my assignment, it took two years for someone to step up and let me know what was going on instead of just months, but it's the same idea.
