The Chicken Coop

I am a paper crafter. I've been playing with paper, and cutting and pasting for many years now and I still just love it. I teach classes each month and would love to have you.
You can find me at MyRedHen.blogspot.com and on Pinterest
or email me at MyRedHen4@yahoo.com
I'd love to hear from you.
Every now and then I have some cards or little treats available for sale that may be seen here.
My blog also contains my personal posts. Ignore them if you like, but you may get a kick out of them. Maybe my girls will read them one day and get insights into the inner workings of an old woman's brain....Scary Thought!
There is a list of labels on the right side of the blog, so you can click there to go to only the posts that you are interested in. That will allow you to skip the personal posts and any items for sale if you wish. No matter which way you choose, I hope will enjoy my little blog and visit often.

To Infinity and Beyond!

Hello again everyone

I was buzzing around the internet and discovered that we are in the middle of World Space Week, October 4th thru the 10th. I had no idea!

World Space Week is an annual holiday observed from October 4 to 10 in over 95 nations throughout the world. It is officially defined as "an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition".

The theme they chose this year is "Women in Space" so hooray for us.

Funny thing is, I had been working on a series of space themed cards so I took part in my own way.. Here's a quick shot of what I was up to.

I plan on offering a class with an adventure theme and when I do I will be walking you through making a couple of others. In that class we will lift off into space, delve into the sea

World Smile Day

Since 1999 the first Friday in October has been designated as World Smile Day which aims to spread the message of smiles and friendliness to the world.

I'm not feeling tip top today but I can sure muster a Smile. No one may see it except the puppies I'm watching but they'll enjoy it. I'll smile double while I'm out and about tomorrow.

Happy Smile Day to all of you!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!

 Today is Love People Day!!

I'm sure there's someone in your life who could really use a little reminder of how much they are loved and while we're at it let's do a little something loving for those that we may come in contact with today. Pay for the persons meal behind us in line at the drive up or the purchase of the one behind us in the check out line. Add a extra good tip to our waitress after our meal while eating out. Or in smaller ways just a smile, a thank you, or holding a door are little ways we can just send out a bit of love to those around us.

As card makers we have another way to spread a little love. A handmade card showing up in a mailbox among the bills and junk mail never fails to bring a boost.

Just as a reminder, in just a few days on Saturday our own very special holiday is coming. It's World Card Making Day!! What a perfect time to get together with a friend and do some cutting and pasting while making some awesome cards. Or just a great excuse to get out all those supplies at home on your own and play ALL DAY!!

I'll share a card or two that I make and I'd love to see the creations you come up with on your own or with friends so please share in the comments.

Have a great day all, and get out there and spread some love. ❤

National Holidays

I'm trying to keep track on my calendar of all the national holidays I become aware of. Both important, silly and uplifting.

For instance yesterday was Grandparents Day (an important one in my book). Here is the history of this "very important" day.

In 1969, nine-year-old Russell Capper sent President Nixon a letter suggesting that a day should be set aside in order to celebrate grandparents. On June 12, 1969, he received a letter back from Rose Mary Woods — Personal Secretary to the President — reading, “Dear Russell

Thank you for your letter to President Nixon. Your suggestion regarding a Grandparent’s Day is appreciated, but the President ordinarily issues proclamations designating periods for special observance only when a Congressional resolution authorizes him to do so. With best wishes, Sincerely, Rose Mary Woods Personal Secretary to the President.”

Following this letter, Marian McQuade was recognized nationally by the U.S. Senate and by President Jimmy Carter as the founder of National Grandparents Day. McQuade wanted to educate the youth about the importance of seniors and the contributions they have made throughout history. She urged the youth to “adopt” a grandparent and learn more about their lives, challenges, and desires for the future.

In 1977, Senator Randolph, with the help of other senators, introduced a joint resolution to the senate requesting the president to “issue annually a proclamation designating the first Sunday of September after Labor Day of each year as ‘National Grandparents’ Day’.” Congress passed the legislation, proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparent’s Day. On August 3, 1978, Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation, and the day was finally celebrated the following year.

Thanks Russell!!!

I spent the day with three of my four grand kids and had a wonderful time.

It is my goal to talk about these days on my blog and occasionally add a Make-N-Take video to help celebrate them.

Today is Positive Thinking Day and while I did not create a Make-N-Take to go along with the theme I do plan on working all day so I'm going to put on my Positive Thinking cap and positively think that I will get lots and lots done. I also positively think that I will remember to post some picture proof on my blog tomorrow to record that I accomplished my goal.

Guess that means I'd better get to work.

How about you guys??

Marshmallow Toasting Day

Well All, summer hasn't left us yet and tomorrow is National Marshmallow Toasting Day.

I was going to make a cute card as a Make-N-Take, but I'm not feeling well and unable to get it done.

I'd love to see if one of you come up with a cute card or scrapbook layout with the theme. If you do, please post it here and all who do will be entered into a drawing for a little prize.

I did do a layout at one point. I'm not at home now but I will be going by there tomorrow. If I find it I will add a picture here.

For now I'll just add this cute image and wish you all a great day.

Paper Pumpkin Alternative

I finally came up with an alternative to this month's "So Cool" kit that I thought was worth sharing.

I used the negative strip from the included silver glitter shapes and three of the stickers we were given. I then added some cardstock, a strip of printed paper and a few embellishments and I had a slimline card that I really like.

I have a wonderful lady that hosts my nighttime card classes in her home and I gave it to her in our Paper Pumpkin Club meeting last night.

This should be enough inspiration for you to create your very own but if you want one exactly like this one I have a few little kits available. The kit is $3 and will come prestamped (The stamps I used were not SU stsmps) and will include everything I added beyond the Pumpkin kit as well as a short video to tell you how I put it together. If you want a kit with a different greeting than I used or want the greeting left blank, please let me know.

My Make-N-Take Valentines

Last week (I think it was last week 🤪)

I shared emailed out a Make-N-Take Monday making two valentine cards and I still had the negatives that remained after cutting out my hearts.

Well, if you know me you know that I couldn't just throw them away. They were still hanging around my desk this morning so I quickly turned them into cards.
I feel much better not having wasted a bit.
And ladies remember that I made these from scraps left over from other projects. I only added card bases.

I wish I had gotten myself together to do a Make-N-Take this week, but I didn't.
I'll get there.
In the meantime I thought this update would give you more creative ideas.
