The Chicken Coop

I am a paper crafter. I've been playing with paper, and cutting and pasting for many years now and I still just love it. I teach classes each month and would love to have you.
You can find me at MyRedHen.blogspot.com and on Pinterest
or email me at MyRedHen4@yahoo.com
I'd love to hear from you.
Every now and then I have some cards or little treats available for sale that may be seen here.
My blog also contains my personal posts. Ignore them if you like, but you may get a kick out of them. Maybe my girls will read them one day and get insights into the inner workings of an old woman's brain....Scary Thought!
There is a list of labels on the right side of the blog, so you can click there to go to only the posts that you are interested in. That will allow you to skip the personal posts and any items for sale if you wish. No matter which way you choose, I hope will enjoy my little blog and visit often.

Come One Come All

Today Carol and I are at our first craft show for this trip.

I've been doing some sewing and have two new offerings to my merchandise.
First, I've made Thread Catchers. These are cute little things to stick your cut off threads in if you're sewing or embroidering. I saw one online and wanted one but it was over $20 so I said "I can make that." I have one next to me now as I do my sewing and it's getting nice and full. I'm selling them for $10 each.

Next...
My friend Carol crochets and years ago I made her a quilted tote to srore her crochet hooks. I've always wanted one of my own so of course I didn't make just one. Thought others might like them as well. I'm selling them for $18 each.

This show was only for today but we are on for a two day one next weekend. Wish me luck!

Holy Frijoles Batman

Today is National Super Hero Day.

I post this day especially for my friend Tamra and dear sweet Nate who are huge Marvel hero fans.

I made a Batman card once that I'd love to display for this day but I'm far from home and this is the best I have to offer. They look sorta super hero-y don't they?

Marvel employees created National Superhero Day on April 28, 1995 to celebrate everyone’s favorite superheroes, but for superheroes only — Those nasty villains just aren’t deserving of their own day. The idea behind superhero day is to honor those who serve and protect while fighting evil. No matter who your favorite hero is, honoring the real or fictional people that inspire us is a worthwhile cause this April 28.

Did you know the first superhero ever was created in 1936? He was named Phantom and he started with his own comic strip in a U.S. newspaper. This was the first known beginnings of a published superhero and, today, there are hundreds of well-known heroes that everyone loves.

Just think about all those superheroes you loved growing up (and probably still love). We’re talking about Spiderman, Thor, Ironman, Captain Marvel, and many other fan favorites. Those heroes are all from Marvel comics, the creators of “The Fantastic Four,” “The Avengers,” and “X-Men.” However, Marvel superheroes aren’t the only ones out there. If you’re a fan of Batman, Wonder Woman, or Superman, those superheroes were created by DC Comics, and they are equally celebrated on this day!

So who is your favorite super hero?

Need a Plumber?

Today, April 25th, is Hug A Plumber Day. I'm away from home and not posting much but just couldn’t pass up the opportunity for a little giggle.

Seriously though, many plumbers have saved the day (and, more often, night). They can prevent catastrophe by fixing a toilet or unclogging a drain. What would our lives be without these heroes of indoor plumbing? Don’t laugh. It takes great expertise to really know what goes on in those mazes of pipes and how to keep them all running like clockwork.

Have a great day everyone!

Pajamas!

Tomorrow is Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day. It's s a day to do exactly that: wear your PJs in the office! This is a day that has really taken off over the years. In fact, we have even seen Martha Stewart get on-board, with herself and all of her staff members wearing their pajamas for her television show.

It is a great way to have a bit of fun and feel comfortable in the workplace. After all, a lot of people don’t like sitting in a suit or a fitted skirt all day long, and so wearing pajamas for the day is a fun way of letting everyone feel as comfortable as possible in the workplace.

There is no secret meaning behind this day; it was simply created for a bit of fun! It creates a relaxed and laid back atmosphere, which is especially beneficial for those in high pressure and serious jobs, such as tax preparers and accounts. Wearing pajamas can help to alleviate some of the stress that is typically experienced. It also means that you have a bit of extra time in the morning, as you don’t need to worry about looking pristine.

Tomorrow being Sunday, not too many people will have to worry about whether they want to participate.

Since my work is done right here at home this is easy for me to do. Actually if I happen to sit down at my desk before changing out of my PJs, I might end up still in those jammies quite some time later. What can i say, the time passes and I just don't think of it.

Well, whatever you decide to wear tomorrow, I hope you all have a relaxing carefree day tomorrow

Lets Crop!

Just a quick note to remind you all that I am hosting one of my crops at the church on April 15th. You do need to sign up beforehand so that I know how many to expect.

I'm looking forward to seeing some of you then.

Up With Pets!!

Today is National Pet Day. It was founded by Colleen Paige, an animal welfare advocate and pet and family lifestyle expert in 2006 to celebrate the joy pets can bring to us. She also wanted to bring attention to the ongoing needs of many pets of all kinds waiting in shelters to be adopted. She encouraged people who want purebred dogs and cats to contact rescue organizations instead of going to a breeder. “Don’t shop! Adopt!” has become the holiday motto. In 1973, the Humane Society of the United States estimated that 13 million cats and dogs enter shelters every year.Today, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide. Some are strays, some are surrendered by owners who could no longer care for them, and some are seized in legal actions. Colleen’s holiday got its start in the U.S., but it soon expanded internationally. Pet lovers now mark the day in the U.K., Ireland, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Spain, Guam, Scotland, and many more nations. Celebrities have also taken up the cause. National Pet Day has been promoted by Taylor Swift, Ellen De Generes, Ricky Gervais, Cee Lo Green, Jimmy Fallon, Willy Nelson, Kevin Bacon, Seth Myers, and Carrie Underwood, among others.Social media has also helped spread the celebration and promote Colleen’s cause.
A home is certainly not the same without a pet. I certainly miss having one so I thought I'd post a picture of my Peek-A-Boo.

She was such a sweetie. I sure miss her and would love to have a dog again

Down with Housework

Today is National No Housework Day. Now here's one I can really get behind. I actually don't need much of an excuse to avoid housework but today I simply must. I've basically been ordered to.

Actually I rarely spend a day without tidying a little bit of something and sometimes once I start, I can't stop and it gobbles up my whole day. But not today. Today I'm going to follow orders and avoid it at all costs. If I'm tempted at all I may just abandon the house all together and go out to run some errands or see a movie.

Speaking of temptation, today is also National Coffee Cake Day. I don't have any in the house so I may have to add that to my list of errands and pick some up. A nice piece of coffee cake sounds quite delicious.

End of the Rainbow

Today is National Find a Rainbow Day. I don't think there's much chance of finding one here where I am today. I woke up once again to find my world covered in snow. As my dear friend said "This year is out of control" Amen to that!

So I'm adding a picture of this card to my post  to help you all out with your rainbow search.

Have a fabulous day everyone!

Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

It’s National Peanut Butter and Jelly day! This combo is just about the best thing since sliced bread. Peanut butter debuted at the 1883 Chicago World’s Fair. It was mainly sold in fancy tea rooms until the early 1900s, when the peanut industry commercialized and peanut butter became more affordable for everyone.

A home economist named Julia Davis Chandler conjured up the first known recipe for PB&J in a Boston cooking magazine back in 1901 (she recommended currant jelly). The 1928 pre-sliced bread revolution led a lot of people to eat peanut butter sandwiches during the Great Depression since it was an affordable and nutritious treat that kids could make for themselves. During WWII the U.S. Army’s food ration list included peanut butter, jelly, and bread — so give soldiers the credit for combining these tasty ingredients into the classic combination we know and love today. They brought their recipe back home, and American children have benefited ever since.

Let’s give thanks to all the PB&J pioneers! Peanut butter and jelly’s an affordable, tasty, and easy lunch we can all appreciate on April 2.

Celebrating this day has reminded me of picking up my daughter Megan and her best friend from camp one year where they had learned the song. Along the trip home I was serenaded with "Peanut, peanut butter. ...and jelly"

They were so cute.

Now my baby girl is a grown up woman with three kids of her own these days. I wonder if she has taught her kids the song.

Well, enough reminiscing. I think I'll make a sandwich.

Note from an April Fool

Happy April Fools Day

I've been a bit lazy with my blog lately.  So sorry. I kind of checked out there for  bit but I promise to be better......No Foolin. 😘

I'm not much of a prankster but if any of you are, have fun today, but be safe and kind with your tricks.

Today is also National Handmade Day and I choose to focus on that. I'm going to get to my desk and create, not that I don't do that nearly every day.

Handmade Day was suggested by Amy Bierstedt of the From Scratch Farm website in 2017 and had its official celebration the following year, on April 7, 2018. In just a few short years, National Handmade Day has grown in popularity to include support from local shops as well as national companies, like Jo-Ann Fabrics.

Celebrated each year on the first Saturday in the month of April, National Handmade Day brings with it an ideal opportunity to show appreciation for those who are creative and inspirational with their handmade products. Instead of purchasing items that are mass-produced, take time on National Handmade Day to support local artisans with their handmade crafts. It’s a wonderful way to be more sustainable and supportive of the community..

When buying gifts, even things for myself, I love buying handmade items and supporting small business. I love giving and receiving handmade gifts as well. They just seem so much more personal and meaningful.

Well, it's time to get to that desk but just one more thing. Today is also National Cent Day....Penny for your thoughts. 😁
