National Bikini Day

Today is National Bikini Day
It marks the anniversary of its invention in 1946. Since its debut in Paris women have been hitting the beaches and pool sides in the revealing two-piece bathing suit.

It was named after the Bikini Atoll, where the United States conducted atomic tests. By World War II, sunbathers in Europe had cast aside the chaste one-piece bathing costumes for simple two-piece bathing suits. However, nothing prepared the United States for the revealing bikini. The skimpy strips of fabric were seen as less than a women’s unmentionables and American’s sense of decency kept them from accepting the bikini until the 1960s. Today, the bikini comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and fabrics. Designers expanded the style to flatter more body shapes, enticing more women to wear the fashion and throughout the summer, the bikini can be seen on beaches and pools everywhere.

So there's a bit of history about the bikini. Believe it or not, my history once included the bikini. Sadly though, those days are long gone. It's a beautiful day to be wearing a bikini and hitting the pool or the lake so you young girls don your bikinis and enjoy it.

Coincidently July 5th is also National Hawaii Day which recognizes the 50th state to be granted statehood. Oh to be in Hawaii right now with a body appropriate to be wearing a bikini and enjoying a beautiful Hawaiian beach. Dream on old woman.

Come One Come All

Today Carol and I are at our first craft show for this trip.

I've been doing some sewing and have two new offerings to my merchandise.
First, I've made Thread Catchers. These are cute little things to stick your cut off threads in if you're sewing or embroidering. I saw one online and wanted one but it was over $20 so I said "I can make that." I have one next to me now as I do my sewing and it's getting nice and full. I'm selling them for $10 each.

Next...
My friend Carol crochets and years ago I made her a quilted tote to srore her crochet hooks. I've always wanted one of my own so of course I didn't make just one. Thought others might like them as well. I'm selling them for $18 each.

This show was only for today but we are on for a two day one next weekend. Wish me luck!

Peanut Butter and Jelly Day

It’s National Peanut Butter and Jelly day! This combo is just about the best thing since sliced bread. Peanut butter debuted at the 1883 Chicago World’s Fair. It was mainly sold in fancy tea rooms until the early 1900s, when the peanut industry commercialized and peanut butter became more affordable for everyone.

A home economist named Julia Davis Chandler conjured up the first known recipe for PB&J in a Boston cooking magazine back in 1901 (she recommended currant jelly). The 1928 pre-sliced bread revolution led a lot of people to eat peanut butter sandwiches during the Great Depression since it was an affordable and nutritious treat that kids could make for themselves. During WWII the U.S. Army’s food ration list included peanut butter, jelly, and bread — so give soldiers the credit for combining these tasty ingredients into the classic combination we know and love today. They brought their recipe back home, and American children have benefited ever since.

Let’s give thanks to all the PB&J pioneers! Peanut butter and jelly’s an affordable, tasty, and easy lunch we can all appreciate on April 2.

Celebrating this day has reminded me of picking up my daughter Megan and her best friend from camp one year where they had learned the song. Along the trip home I was serenaded with "Peanut, peanut butter. ...and jelly"

They were so cute.

Now my baby girl is a grown up woman with three kids of her own these days. I wonder if she has taught her kids the song.

Well, enough reminiscing. I think I'll make a sandwich.

New Look

 Hello All

Have you noticed that there is finally a name on the top of my blog? Rae helped me and now my blog looks a little more official.

Also got a signature put on the bottom of my emails with a link to take you straight to my blog.

She says I need more pictures so I'll work on that. In truth I haven't been paying enough attention to it this past week and haven't been at my desk enough. I've decided to take up counted cross stitch again and I've been doing a lot of it. Gonna try and get back to my desk and do some work today....tomorrow??? Hmmmm

Farewell

For a few years I have been hosting two days of crafting on a few weekends each year and I have loved it. Is it a lot of work? Absolutely,  but it has been great fun. There's nothing like a weekend full of fun, scrapbooking and card making. This past weekend however I sadly hosted my final one. It was such a difficult decision for me but it was very hard on me physically and really needed to take some things off my schedule so it was something I felt I needed to do.

I have met and been able to enjoy so many lovely ladies and they have brought me so much joy. In 2021 I had an event just days after my 70th birthday. I left the event for a bit to grab a soda or something and when I came back they all burst into song, they were all wearing birthday party hats and of course there was cake. It meant the world to me.

This year all I poked my head out the door beside me for moments and when I turned around to my table there was a beautiful cake and a big bouquet of balloons. I don't know how they managed it but it was so special. I also received a sweet card, a beautiful bouquet of flowers and lots of hugs.

Never fear though. My dear friend Rae decided that we couldn't just stop having them and so she has stepped up to say that she will take it over to do one weekend in the Spring and one in the Fall. I will be able to attend as a participant instead of the host and I will still be able to enjoy all the wonderful women that I have meant so much to me these last few years.

I will still be holding a much smaller Saturday only event at my church on the third Saturday most months and I am still teaching my classes. I just really needed to slow down a bit.

Here's to all of the wonderful ladies who take my classes and spend time crafting with me.

I am truly blessed.

Grouchy?

Today is "Do a Grouch a Favor Day"

I can't say that I can think of someone around me that's being particularly grouchy right now but if you're dealing with someone I encourage you to do them a little favor. You'd be amazed at how a little kindness can change a person's attitude...sometimes immediately. Doesn't have to be anything big....a kind gesture letting them know that you care, a favorite piece of candy or candy bar given for no reason at all, cooking their favorite dinner, or a sweet note slipped in a lunch box.

Now...A funny thing just happened. I was looking for grouchy clip art to include in this post and this picture popped up.

As many of you know my brother very recently passed away. For years he would ride his bike up to the Vons store and go around with a cheery hello to all. His goal each day to make people smile. He knew them all, their names, their kids names, and what was going on in their lives. One of his greatest joys was ringing bells in front of the store for the Salvation Army. He wanted to give people a smile whether they gave or not and with yhat white beard, when kids came by he added a big "HO HO HO! It was so important to him that one if his doctors presented this t-shirt to him. It reads "Smiles Required"  He loved it.

So there you have it. My little brother. I'm dedicating this day to him because I know there were so many times he turned a frown upside down for those around him. Along with me they're going to miss him.

Remember When

We are having a service for my brother on Sunday. I just finished going through old photos in order to take pictures of him along and I found this. I shared it somewhere back in 2002 but I want to share it again here so that it will be recorded somewhere, I love it and I hope you enjoy it. Mostly I hope you were lucky enough to live it.

Remember when....

If you're close to my age, stroll with me ...close your eyes...and go back...before the internet...before bombings, AIDS, herpes, before semiautomatic guns and crack...before SEGA or Super Ninetendo...way back! I remember.

I'm taking about sitting on the curb...about playing hide-and -seek, or kick the can outside in the street until your porch light came on. And mother may I, red rover, Simon says and red-light-green-light. Lunch boxes with a thermos, chocolate milk and penny candy from the store, hopscotch, skates with keys, hula hoops, wax lips and mustaches, Mary Janes, saddle shoes and Coke bottles with the names of cities on the bottom. Christmas morning, your first day of school, bedtime prayers, goodnight kisses, climbing trees, getting an ice cream of the ice cream truck, or a donut from the bakery one

Remember when it took 5 minutes for the TV to warm up and it went off the air each night.

When nearly everyone's mom was at home when the kids got home from school?

When we went to Sunday School every Sunday morning and Vacation Bible School every summer.

When a quarter was a great allowance, when you'd reach into a muddy gutter for a penny.

When all your male teachers wore neckties and ladies got there hair done every week and wore high heels. When we wore nylons that were in two pieces.

Remember running through the sprinkler, playing in the rain, bobby pins, Mickey Mouse Club on Sunday evenings, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Kookla Fran and Ollie, Betty Boop, and when The Wizard of Oz was something to look forward to each year. Remember American Bandstand, and seeing it all in black and white.

When going around the corner seemed far away, and going to town seemed like going somewhere.

Climbing trees, making forts, backyard shows, lemonade stands, cops and robbers, cowboys and indians, jumping on the bed, pillow fights, ribbon candy, tinsel on the Christmas tree that mom insisted should be done one at a time. Jackie Gleason, white gloves, going to the movie theater for a double feature complete with cartoons, a balcony, and intermissions,  running till you were out of breath, laughing so hard that your stomach hurt, being tired from playing...your first crush...remember that?

Koolaid was the drink of summer or drinking water right out of the garden hose, toting your friends on your handle bars, wearing new shoes on the first day of school, Easter morning and class filed trips

Not stepping on a crack or you'd break your mother's back, paper chains and popcorn chains at Christmas, gum wrapper chains at other times, silhouettes of Lincoln and Washington, the smells of school, of paste and plaster of Paris, of memiograph copies.

Remember when there were only two types of sneakers for boys and girls-Keds and PF Flyers. Remember girls ugly gym uniforms.

When you got your windows cleaned, your oil checked, and gas pumped without asking_All for free and you got trading stamps too!

When laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box.
When it was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your family.
When the worst thing you could do at school was flunk a test or chew gum, or wear to short a skirt, and the prom was in the gym or the lunch room. When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate the student awaited the student at home. We lived in fear for our lives, but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs or gangs. Our parents were a much bigger threat. But we survived because their love was so much greater than the threat. Remember heading out on Halloween with a pillow case to run free with no supervision? Remember waking up on Saturday morning to the sound of a real lawn mower and the smell of fresh cut grass blowing in through your open window , when summers were filled with play, bike rides and swimming in the pool of the one neighbor who had the means to have one, and endless outdoor games even after dark.

Remember when a '55 Chevy was the dream car, and you sat close to your boy friend while he drove with one hand because his arm was around your shoulder, when we went steady. and girls wore his class ring her finger with yarn wrapped around it so it would fit her finger.

Remember lying on the grass with your friends looking at the clouds and saying things like "That one looks like a...".

Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better, spinning around, getting dizzy and falling down was a cause for giggles, the worst embarrassment
was being picked last for a team,  and older siblings were the worst tormentors, but also the fiercest protectors.

Remember when stuff at the store came without safety caps, and hermedic seals because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger."Race issue" meant arguing about who ran fastest, money issues were handled by whoever was banker in Monopoly. Being old referred to anyone over twenty and the worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was cooties.

With all our progress, don't you wish, just once, you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace and share it with the children of today? So send this to someone who can still remember Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, Laurel and Hardy, Howdy Doody, The Lone Ranger, and Mr Magoo.
If you can remember most or all of these, then you have lived!

PIZZA!!!!!

Join me as I celebrate National Pizza Day!! This is one I can really get behind. I LOVE 🍕Pizza! I'll eat just about any kind. I just pick off what I don't care for and enjoy. Cold or hot and for any meal, I'm in and guess what I'm doing right now to celebrate! (besides having pizzafor dinner)

But where did these awesome pies come from...?

Though flatbreads with toppings were consumed by ancient Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks, the modern birthplace of the pizza is southwestern Italy’s Campania region. It was notorious for its throngs of working poor who required inexpensive food that could be consumed quickly. Flatbreads with toppings that can be eaten for every meal — fulfilled this need. These early pizzas featured tasty toppings such as tomatoes, cheese, oil, anchovies, and garlic. More well off Italians found their eating habits disgusting.

King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visited Naples in 1889 and legend says that the traveling pair became bored with their steady diet of French cuisine and asked for an assortment of pizzas from the city’s Pizzeria Brandi, founded in 1760. The variety the queen enjoyed the most was called pizza mozzarella, a pie topped with the soft white cheese, red tomatoes, and green basil — much resembling the Italian flag. Since then, this particular choice of toppings has been dubbed the Margherita pizza.

However, even with the Queen’s love for the dish, pizza would remain little known in Italy beyond Naples’ borders until the 1940s.  Immigrants to the United States from across the sea began replicating their flatbreads in New York and other American cities and relatively quickly, the flavors and aromas of pizza won us all over.

Okay, here are my finished masterpieces. I made a nice big pizza and had enough for 2 large 5x7 cards. I'm going to add sentiments but I have to print them out myself and I'm too lazy to do it right now. One will say...."Wishing you a big slice of HAPPY", and the other will have some hearts added and say "You have a pizza my heart".

What do you think?

Now I've earned a nice big pizza for myself.

Time to order!!

It's 2023

Well it was to be my goal to pay attention to my blog this year and I find myself stuck in a hotel room with not much to do, so it seems like a good time to start.

I woke up New Year's Eve morning with an ugly cold and the power, which is still not restored, went of that day.  I took it as long as I could and then bailed. I checked into a hotel yesterday. The latest estimate for power is tonight but we'll see. They've changed it many times.

I look back and find that January 1st is Commitment Day and this first week of the year is Resolution Week. So I will commit to being a better blogger and resolutely try to keep it up. We'll see how it goes.

January 2nd through the 8th is "Someday We'll Laugh About This Week" What I've been going through this week has not seemed very funny but I think I may be able to look back and find something to laugh about. Maybe not this week though.

My plan is to add something funny, tell a story, report on the many crazy holidays, or incorporate my card and craft making into the blog this year so I hope you'll keep checking in and comment. I'd love for you to interact with me.

I just heard that the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors has proclaimed today "Sacramento Jimboy's Taco Day"

No...I do not live in Sacramento,  but I LOVE Jimboy's tacos. And their rice. DELICIOUS!!

So guess what I'm going to have for lunch today. That's right. I'm going to run right through their drive through and treat myself  YUM!

I just thought everyone would  need to know so I've done my part to get the word out. 😄

Happy National Cheeseburger Day!!

That's right, today was a day to celebrate cheeseburgers. There's just nothing like a really good one!

Some of my favorites are Five Guy's, Red Robin, and Steak and Shake which is where I celebrated the day. I had never been to one until I held one of my crops at a hotel where there was one right next door.  It was DELICIOUS so I of course wanted one again.

So funny story....a friend of mine was walking over and offered to get mine for me. She came back with it and the trouble began. First of all I ordered a side of baked beans which were on the menu. They informed her that they didn't sell them. They had chili beans which is what I really wanted but they didn't mention that to her. Secondly there was some problem about the onions. I don't remember what anymore and finally they charged me for my soda but did not give it to me. That was the final straw and I went marching over to complain. Once there they blamed the mix up on my friend saying she misunderstood something or other. When I got back to the crop I told her that they had thrown her under the bus and she said "That's it! Now I'm going over there!" I thought she was kidding but off she went. When she came back we took this picture so I could scrapbook it posterity.

I'm surprised we haven't been banned.

And yes.....

I am wearing pajamas. It was the New Year's Eve crop which had a Pajama Party theme. Everyone however did not participate. I'm not naming any names but the picture points out one of my non-participants.

Here's a picture of some of us who joined in.

Now...

Back to the cheeseburgers.

My friend and I obviously didn't boycott Steak and Shake after our experience. Hey, the hamburgers are just TOO good! So there we were today to celebrate cheeseburger's big day.

Here's mine. Doesn't it look delicious?

Trust me, it was. I usually save half my burger for later, but not today. It was delicious that I ate the whole thing.
I WILL be enjoying cheeseburgers again and I WON'T be waiting to enjoy them only once a year.

I Guess I've Been Busy

Wow gals!!

I didn’t have room on my shelf for all the cards I made this month so I began to put them away and realized I had quite a pile  I decided to take pictures.

                   Check it Out!!

And believe it or not, this isn't all.

There were some I just made separately to finish things up or to take part in a challenge online.

All of these in the pictures here were generated from my classes in August.

                       Whew!!

I think I'm tired! But no time to sit on the couch. I still have more cards to make.

The month isn't over yet!

Okay...Let's see who's watching my blog. I have a little prize to give away. Let's see who can guess what my total comes to by the end of the month.

Whoever gets the closest wins!

Visual Triangle

Hi All
I'm trying to take part in a challenge and this is my first assignment.
I was to create a card with a visual triangle. I think I've got one here that's a touch lopsided, but that counts. Even the hot air ballon is triangular shaped.
I used a stamp from The Cat's Pajamas #K-5838 CL, and the adorable plaid paper is from a 6X6 paper pad from My Favorite Things. I love every single piece of it!
Hint Sneak Peek....
The gals in my upcoming Red Hen Roundup class will be making the one with the clouds.

My next assignment is rainbows. I'll be posting that next

Playing with Cardstock

This blog post is just to put some pictures out there of my work with cardstock.  I am applying to be on the design team of a site that sells great cardstock. It's getting harder and harder to run to the store and pick up the color you need.  To solve that problem I ordered a sample ring of the colors sold by www.12x12cardstock.com so that I can flip through it and get just the right paper I need. They have a ton of beautiful colors. Just what we need.  I fanned this out so that you could see just a few.
                        Yummy right?

Anyway,  this post is just going to show some pictures listing the colors I used.

This first one is a card we will be doing in my upcoming Red Hen Roundup class.
I used:  Mustard #71036
Rust #71071465
Latte #710503
And the inside has a piece of Vanilla #71041

This scrapbook page uses Dandelion #71037 and black.
I drew red lines on the Dandelion to copy the lines on Woody's shirt.
Megan drew stripes on a shirt that she had to dye yellow in order to get the proper color for Woody's shirt, but here's a fact about my daughter who is a
SUPER perfectionist.
She got all done with the first shirt and when she buttoned it up she realized that she hadn't made the lines line up on the front. Could she say it was fine? Absolutely not!
She bought another white shirt, dyed it the proper shade of yellow and did the lines all over again.
 I used: Dandelion #71037
and black

I often sit at night and practice coloring
(I need lots of practice 😋)
I colored these flowers with alchohol markers during a practice session, then put them on a card base of Pine #71057 to complete a car,d. The greetings use white and Dandelion #71037.....love that color!

And finally I include the double page layout of the first day of nursery school for my little man. I love the picture Megan took of him in the classroom.
He looks so small as he surveys his new world. He's going to be 8 years old next month and will be entering 3re grade. Where does the time go?
These sweet times seem to fly by way too quickly.
All that to tell you that I used:
Honeycomb #71560
for the background
A well as: Denim #71073
and some black and white.

That's enough from me. Time to head to my desk and create some more.

Be sure and check out their site....

Hint: The sample ring really helps.

Time for S'mores!!

Today is National Graham Cracker Day!!
I was just feeding Lyla a few a bit ago to celebrate.
They definitely are a tasty snack and they really shine when used as a pie crust.
I'm always interested in what's behind these days so I thought I'd share the results of my investigation.

When Sylvester Graham first invented the slightly sweetened cracker, he intended it as a health food. In the early 1800s, the Presbyterian minister developed the cracker as part of his “Graham Diet” program. They were made from whole wheat graham flour with added bran and wheat germs. He believed his snack would curb sinful cravings.
Today, makers use bleached white flour and blend a variety of flavors including honey, cinnamon, and chocolate. They also come in smaller bite-size snacks and fun shapes.
While a delicious snack on their own, they also make terrific ingredients for desserts. Crushed graham crackers blended with butter and pressed into pie tins, or springform pans make excellent crusts when lightly toasted. Graham crackers layered between yogurt and fruit taste delicious in a parfait. When it comes to crumb toppings, oats, brown sugar, butter, and crushed graham crackers blended together and lightly toasted will always satisfy .

The boys and I will be going camping soon and of course that always means s'mores will make an appearance.
They are also a great snack for the grandkids.
So thanks Sylvester!
We appreciate them!

By the way.....
Tomorrow is National Fried Chicken Day!
I'll have mine with mashed potatoes and gravy thank you. 😘

Happy Birthday Lyla!

My darling granddaughter Lyla is turning one year old on Saturday and of course there's goubg to be a big party. Megan has chosen a watermelon theme for the party, cause Lyla's just that sweet.
I just completed her birthday card so I thought  I'd  share.

The watermelon has a shaker inside so that she can enjoy shaking it. :)
Hope she likes it!

DONUTS!!

I heard an announcement on the radio today that reminded me that I have been slacking terribly with my blog.

The announcement was to inform us that this Friday is National Donut Day.
Let me just say that I do love a really good donut....DELICIOUS!!

I just may have to venture out on Friday on a search for one.
I mean if it's National Donut Day it is kind of important to eat a donut (or 2 or 3).
It sounds like a requirement to me.

Now to find the best one. Maybe some research needs to be done.

What is your very favorite?
Chime in and let me know and you will get an extra entry to win my June prize box.

Hamburger Day!!

This morning I realized that I have been                    neglecting my poor blog.
And I was doing so well!
What can I say. I finally got to see my grandbabies complete with hugs, cuddles and sleep overs and I lost thought of anything else
 It had been months!!
I had been deprived way too long and I'm glad the grandbaby drought is over.
Now...
I'm back today to report that today is
National Hamburger Day.
I do love myself a good burger!

I made a few little sliders last night and have a couple waiting in the frig to heat  up. I was thinking that they would be perfect to celebrate the day. Then I started looking a photos to add here and they look mighty tasty.
We'll see if my practical and frugal side will win out.
If Steak and Shake or Five Guys start calling to me I may fold.
Those are my two favorites
What are yours?
I'd love to know. Maybe a new burger might join the chorus in my head.

Burger anyone?
Yes please.
Barbecue sauce, grilled onions, and cheese please.

Over the Rainbow

Hi All
I am SO TIRED of this wind!!
I've decided that I'm closing all my blinds in protest so I can try to get some work done without seeing it.
If it keeps up I hope to see you all on the other side.
I'll wait for you in Munchkin Land.

Hey, if I can picture myself in the Land of Oz, I can sure pretend it's not windy, right?

A Happy Mother's Day!!

I hope you all had a Mother's Day that was made special for you in some way. I myself could not have asked for a better gift than the one I got.
Since COVID19 I have missed my grandbabies terribly. Occasionally the family would pull up to the curb outside my gate to visit from the car. You can see pictures like that from my birthday post. Yesterday in the afternoon I got an text from Megan asking if I would like to have dinner with the boys. OF COURSE I WOULD!! That evening they all went to In and Out for burgers and brought it along with a blanket and chairs to have a picnic out in the yard. It was the first time the kids had even been inside the gate for months. I got to enjoy their company and watch two crazy boys run and play like two crazy boys. And Lyla...what a doll! You can see in the pictures that I had my hands clasped in my lap. I clutched them tightly there the whole time to keep from reaching out to her. Especially when she began crawling over to my chair and pulling herself up to me. I talked to her and enjoyed her smile but kept my hands off. It seemed to me as if she was wondering "Why doesn't my grandma pick me up and play with me?" Believe me my darlin' I wanted to. We even got close enough to briefly take these pictures.

So while my Mother's Day did not include hugs and hands on play, it was a start and I enjoyed every minute of it.
